Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with students from the University of Washington and Gonzaga University who wanted to learn more about the world of public relations and marketing. The Huskies invited Weber Shandwick to their campus as a part their “Internship Thursday” program while Gonzaga students visited our office as a part of their annual Seattle Trek.
With the PR landscape continually changing and continually expanding into areas such as social media, graphic design and video production, students who can bring a variety of different skill sets and talents to the table are now more important than ever before. It was very exciting for us to see so many students from diverse academic backgrounds interested in our work at Weber Shandwick – from PR and communication majors to students majoring in business, psychology, political science and even biology!
Our discussions with both groups included questions about agency life, what qualities we look for in future employees and advice for aspiring PR and marketing professionals. We left our students with three crucial takeaways that will help them stand out from an interview to an internship:
- Be Knowledgeable: Do your homework and stay up to date on key industry trends.
- Be Memorable: Have an outstanding resume and portfolio. Whether through volunteer work or internships, having that experience is crucial.
- Be Versatile: Keep an open mind and be open to new opportunities.
